Tropical mangroves and sea grasses play a key role in the health of the worlds oceans.  In the village of Baan Jao Mai, villagers are working to conserve and protect mangroves and sea grasses, on the front line of environmental conservation.

The two films on mangrove conservation tell the story of Mae Te, a community leader in Baan Jao Mai, and Colin, an ISDSI student who spent time living and learning from the community.

Mangrove conservation and village ecology

Ma Te is a village elder in Baan Jao Mai, and a leader in mangrove conservation. Ma Te has been active in helping conserve and re-plant mangroves around her village, as well as passing on her knowledge of how to use the fish, clams and other food in the mangroves.  In this video she explains how she uses the mangroves and some of the changes that tourism and global warming have brought.

A student’s perspective

Colin studied at ISDSI, and lived with and learned from Mae Te and other community members in Baan Jao Mai. In this video he talks about what he learned, and the critical role that coastal ecosystems plan in sustainability, from mud flats to mangroves to sea grasses.
