Elephant conservation is a significant and important issue. It is also an area where there is a lot of misinformation, well meaning but misguided ideas, and a lot of passion. At the Patara Elephant Farm Khun Pat is working to educate tourists about elephant rescue and conservation, while helping conserve these magnificent animals for the future.
These two films on elephant conservation tell the story from the perspective of Khun Pat, who is working on elephant conservation and Emma, an ISDSI student who spent time learning about and caring for elephants at the Patara Elephant Farm.
Elephant Conservation and Ethical Tourism
Khun Pat has founded an innovative elephant conservation center, with an emphasis on elephant reproduction as a part of their rescue and rehabilitation, including building an elephant hospital. As elephant habitat is fractured and re-introduction into the wild impossible, every effort needs to be made to maintain a healthy population of elephants, both wild and domesticated. In this video he explains their approach to elephant rescue and conservation, and the role that ethical and engaged tourism can play in conservation.
A Student’s Perspective
Emma studied at ISDSI and spent time at the Patara Elephant farm learning about elephant conservation and health care. Check out the video below where she talks about her experience and the importance of elephant conservation.
