Life in the Field: Living with Karen Host Families

During ISDSI’s Political Ecology of Forests course, students spend 2.5 weeks in the expedition field  exploring the ethno-ecological relationship between the ethnic minority group, the Karen, and the forests they live in. The students are challenged academically, physically and mentally as they examine the biodiversity of the local ecosystem, hike on remote trails from village to village, and meet with community members.  However, one of the most significant parts of the experience that impacts students in the long-term is the unique opportunity to stay with host families.   IMG_1542Living, farming and immersing themselves in the rich culture of six Karen villages, students grow to understand the main topics of the course on a more personal level.  Students see the struggles families have because they are unable to own land, the reality of parents wanting to educate children but not having access to education in their village, and the Karen’s view of how to care for natural resources.  However, students also see the joy that radiates from many of these beautiful people even though they face hardships.  The ability to enjoy “family days,” spend time learning local skills such as natural dyeing and weaving, and learn about each other’s culture through village meetings and cultural exchanges also brings the community and students together.IMG_1605With the new relationships developed, it’s no wonder that by the time students are putting on their backpacks to hike to the next village, many times families are slipping in a bit of extra food for the trail, host moms are giving students a handmade scarf, and everyone is looking to squeeze in time for one last photo. IMG_1543Thank you to the host families of Mae Hong Son who once again took in ISDSI students and staff, and contributed to making this field course a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is not to be missed.  See you again soon!IMG_1759
